SDSU Student Learning
Roundtable Wednesday, October 28 Love Library 430 12:30-1:30pm
The recent release of the federal College Scorecard is the latest manifestation of
a growing federal emphasis on measuring the “value” provided by higher ed institutions.
Driven by concerns about rising costs (with accompanying loan debt) and questions
about seemingly declining returns on that investment, the trend of national policies
has been toward increased accountability with corresponding regulation and oversight.
Not surprisingly, this has been met with resistance on many campuses where faculty
may see these trends as imposing on autonomy and academic freedom, and as elevating
the value of vocational skills over the broader benefits of a liberal arts education.
These concerns notwithstanding, the reality is that the federal pressure on colleges
to “show results” is unlikely to disappear anytime soon – however, there is still
a conversation to be had about what those results should or could look like. What
outcomes are really important? What kind of student learning is most valuable? What
is real evidence of that learning? And how can we at San Diego State take a leadership
role in shaping the answers to those questions beyond just our campus?
Please join us to explore these issues. To provide some background, we ask all participants
to read three short articles:
– College Calculus: What’s the Real Value of Higher Education? – Accreditation and the Federal Future of Higher Education – Falling Short? College Learning and Career Success
As you read, please consider these questions, which will be the starting point of
– What are the implications for higher education overall? – What are the implications for San Diego State? – How might SDSU address these issues in ways that move the national conversation
in a positive direction?
You may also want to look over the WASC institutional report for more information
about how the campus is already responding to some of these issues. We look forward
to an invigorating discussion!
