Beyond Bulletpoints: Using PowerPoint and visual images as tools for student engagement

April 28 @ 10:00 am - 11:00 am

Fri Apr 28
10 – 11am

As chalkboards (or whiteboards) become increasingly obsolete, many instructors routinely use PowerPoint (or similar programs) for class meetings. Yet, we all know that when a PowerPoint deck is terrible, it can ruin a whole presentation; hard-to-read colors or fonts on slides with too much text can detract from even the most engaging speaker. In this workshop, guest speaker Eric Chiang will help instructors think about PowerPoint as more than just a method of content delivery but as tool for actually engaging students.

For this workshop, the Center for Teaching and Learning and MacMillan Publishers are pleased to host Eric Chiang, Associate Professor and Graduate Director in the Economics Department at Florida Atlantic University, where he also serves as the Director of Instructional Technology for the College of Business. The author of Economics: Principles for a Changing World, Professor Chiang has received FAU’s highest teaching award, the Distinguished Teacher of the Year, as well as the Stewart Distinguished Professorship awarded by the College of Business, among numerous other teaching awards. His current research agenda focuses on the effects of online versus face-to-face courses and the power of visual learning.

Coffee and snacks provided. Registration required.

* Graduate students are welcome to attend all CTL events, space permitting. If an event fills up, GTAs will be moved to the waitlist in the order in which they registered.
